We all continued to stare at the television, trying to make sense of the images. I wasn’t sure how such raw footage could even find its way onto the airwaves. Perhaps the propagandists had fled, and some frustrated underlings were able to show the unfiltered news—for once.

“Does this not happen … often?” I asked the question mostly of Oscar.

“Never.” He shook his head. “Never even close to the city.”

Some of the crowd threw coca leaves into the air, at the feet of the guerillas. Apparently this was a show of support from the highland communities that were so well represented by FURP.

Don Pablo put a hand on my shoulder. “You’ll stay with us tonight, Doctor Morales. We’ll make you as comfortable as we can.” An hour passed, and we all did our best to stay calm. “Well,” I said, “if we’ve got all night, I may as well go get this water sample. Where’s the spring, exactly?”

“Keep going past the church.” Don Pablo pointed toward town. “Then just follow the women with cantarros. You can’t miss it.”

“Can I come with you, Eddie?” Raven asked.

“Sure. Let’s go.”

Raven and I took our clean jar and set out for the heart of Huanchillo.
