By the end of the week, Fletcher was seething with frustration. He’d tried to reach Stevie but after leaving a couple of messages for her and sending an email that remained unanswered he accepted he needed to back off for a while. And it wasn’t as if he didn’t have enough work on his plate at the office, either. One of their regular suppliers had unexpectedly closed their doors and filed for bankruptcy, leaving them in the lurch for finishing a project on time for a major client. If they were late, the penalties would be huge and Richmond Construction would take a massive hit. He’d worked late every night so his assistant could clear his schedule for Friday afternoon to allow him to drive to the mountains. If the mountain wouldn’t return his calls, then he’d have to go visit the mountain. He arrived at Nickerson House in the early evening. It had rained heavily for most of the journey, and he was bone weary with concentration and the effects of a demanding week in the office.

He entered by the main door and rang the small brass bell at reception, then waited. It wasn’t long before he heard quick footsteps coming from the hallway that led to the kitchen. Footsteps that slowed and began to lag as Stevie recognized who awaited her.

“Stevie,” he said by way of greeting.

“Fletcher, I wasn’t expecting you,” she said, a flush of color staining her cheeks.

His eyes riveted on her darker ones, and he noted the way her pupils enlarged and her nostrils flared ever so slightly. Her lips parted on an indrawn breath, making her chest rise and fall. Her hair was loose in a glorious tumble of wavy curls that spread over her shoulders and tempted him to bend his head and inhale the scents surrounding her. He pushed all his senses into a box where they wouldn’t distract him or lead him into trouble and focused instead on the purpose of his journey.

“No, I imagine that since you couldn’t bring yourself to return my calls or answer my emails that you wouldn’t have been expecting me, but here I am. Can we finish our discussion, please?”

“You came all this way just to do that?”

“It was kind of hard to do when you refused to communicate with me.”

“I hope you’re not expecting to stay here, we’re—”

“Full up?” he said with a sardonic lift of his brow. “I expected that to be the case when you saw me. I’ll stay at one of the chain hotels in town.”

“Oh? Which one?”

“Does it matter? I’m here now, and if you could spare an hour or so, maybe we could talk this out? Have you eaten?”

“I was just about to eat when you rang the bell.”

He waited for the invitation to join her, but it wasn’t forthcoming. Always a believer that there were times you got a better result by remaining silent than by speaking unnecessarily, he simply continued to stare at her. Eventually, Stevie heaved a huge sigh.
