Chapter Fifteen
Ember
I wake up with a smile stuck on my face. For the past two weeks, Ash and I have been spending hours in my bed each night. When dawn hits, I always kick him out, not wanting my daughter to see. He understands, kissing my breasts, his hand on my still wet pussy. He leaves me to sleep the last few hours alone in bed, and when the alarm forces me up, I feel rested even though Iâm not getting near as much sleep as Iâm used to.
As I move around the kitchen in my terrycloth robe, making a pot of coffee and pulling out milk and cereal, I realize I havenât felt such a lightness in my chest for years. Years.
The reality hits me like a ton of bricks as Cadence jumps onto a stool at the kitchen island. Sheâs growing up so fast. I want her childhood to be happy, not witnessing her parents fighting at every turn, not wondering where her loyalty should lie. Sheâs just a little girl. I glance at my phone, knowing I need to talk to Mitch sooner than later. Iâve been putting off responding to his text for three days.
I want Cadence at my house on Saturday to spend time with Deb.
Iâm not threatened by her... but I donât think Iâm ready to let another woman into my daughterâs life.
âMom, are you listening?â Cadence asks.
I pour her a bowl of cereal, determined to be more present. âWhat, honey?â
âI was wondering, since itâs Friday, if we could have pizza and play a game tonight?â
I smile. âThat sounds awesome. Want to invite anyone from school over?â
Cadence takes a bite of cereal before answering. âI was thinking maybe the band would want to play?â
âPlay what?â Dusky asks, coming into the kitchen, tousling her hair before walking to the coffee pot. Heâs a natural with Cadence, and it turns out he grew up with lots of siblings. Synn, Saint, and Ash enter the kitchen as if on cue. The six of us have fallen into a morning routine. The guys start practice right after I take Cadence to the bus each day and wrap up their work about the time she gets home.
âPizza and board game tonight?â Cadence says, her voice full of hope looking at the world-class rock band as if they are members of her extended family. âOr Pictionary. What about Pictionary?â
âI love âem, lass. Iâm in.â Duskyâs smiles causes one to break out across my own face. It feels so good to see my little girl so happy, itâs all Iâve ever wanted for her.
âSounds great,â Saint says, offering her a high five.
âI donât know,â Synn says with an exaggerated frown. âIâm not that great of an artist.â
Cadence takes his comment utterly seriously. âOh, Iâm not either, Synn. Not like my mom. Sheâs the best at drawing, in the whole wide world, but we just have to do our best. Thatâs enough, Mom says so at least.â
âYouâre an artist?â Saint asks, turning to me in surprise.
