ONE MINUTE INSIGHTS

Pause, Reflect, and Learn

• As a mentor, encourage your mentee to tell the truth about where they are and what they want. At the same time, tell the truth about where you are and what you want.

• As a mentee, you have observations to offer as well. Don’t fall into the trap of letting your mentor always take the lead in conversations.

• Sometimes, just by asking a question, a mentee can make a positive difference in a mentor’s life.

Learning to Network

JOSH popped his head into Eric’s office. “Have a minute?” he asked.

Eric, who’d been about to dial another call, put down his phone. “Sure. Have a seat.”

Josh lowered himself into the armless chair next to Eric’s desk. Framed motivational quotes—alongside Eric’s famous calendar—filled the walls of Eric’s private office.

“Still putting those red Xs up, I see,” said Josh.

“Yep.”

“I actually keep a calendar like that myself now,” Josh said. “It helps.”

“I know, right? Something about the visual instant gratification. And I noticed your numbers are up. Looks like you’ve got your mojo back.”

“Thanks to the things you coached me to do,” Josh said. “I asked for referrals and followed up on them. I made cold calls. I reconnected with clients who haven’t bought from us for a while, and I sold deeper into existing accounts.”

“Excellent!” said Eric.

“All those things have gotten my numbers up. But I’ve hit a plateau again. I haven’t closed a deal all week. I was wondering if you have any other ideas.”

“Only three,” said Eric.

“Great. What are they?”

“Prospect, prospect, and prospect—in that order.”

Josh was less than enthused by Eric’s reply. Apparently it showed on his face.

“You think there’s some magic bullet?” said Eric. “No bullet. Just hard work. Everyone you meet is a potential client, man. Your Uber driver. Your Aunt Margaret. The manager at your local electronics store.”

Josh wondered about Eric’s sweeping generalization. “Everyone?” he asked dubiously.

“Everyone,” said Eric, firmly.
