Chapter Twenty-Three
TO HELL WITH TOMORROW
Tossing and turning from one side onto the other, Nora squeezed her eyes shut as her thoughts continued to circle in her head. One thought, in particular, she could not seem to shake. One that terrified her.
Iâm back in my old bedchamber.
Why that particular thought had not occurred to her with such vehemence before or why it chose this night to frighten her so, Nora did not know. Yet when she opened her eyes and looked at the dim outlines of her chamber, she could not help but remember the last time she had lived here.
Then, she had been full of hope and dreams, looking forward to a future of her own, a family of her own.
Love.
Heaving a deep sigh, Nora turned onto her back, staring up at the darkened ceiling. And now? Now, there was nothing.
No hope.
No dreams.
No future.
Perhaps it was because of the Whickertonâs autumn ball tonight that Noraâs thoughts had decided to torment her. When she closed her eyes, she could all but see the large ballroom, illuminated by countless dancing flames, swaying to the soft notes of the music. She could see a sea of colors, gowns sparkling in azure and emerald, mingling with soft tones of peach and violet.
Was he dancing? A taunting voice suddenly whispered, and Nora flinched.
Oh, she could so easily imagine Troy among the throng of guests. But was that wise? She had bid him farewell, had she not? However, so long as her mind continued to conjure his image, was there any use in staying away from him?
Even now, Nora felt that odd pull, urging her to his side. She had felt it ever since their first kiss years ago. It had never waned; yet since returning home, it had grown stronger. It was no longer a mild hum, always there in the back of her mind. No, now, it was almost deafening, like someone shouting their demands and expecting to be obeyed.
Pushing upright, Nora slipped from the bed. The embers in the fireplace were still glowing in a deep red, sending their warmth across her chamber. She pulled on her robe and tied the strap in the front before stepping up to the window. A crescent moon greeted her far above the woods that led in the direction of Whickerton Grove.
Nora sighedâ¦then stilled as the muffled sound of footsteps drifted to her ears from out in the hall. Her head flew around, and she stared at her door, wondering if she had misheard or if someone else was truly up at this time of night.
Scarcely daring to draw breath, Nora listened, then flinched when the sound came again. Barely audible, but there. Indeed, someone was out in the hall, moving closer. But who? And why?
For a second, Nora wondered if it could be Mr. Clarke, but why would he be up in the middle of the night when he planned to leave early the next morning? It made no sense. Perhapsâ
Noraâs breath lodged in her throat when the sound suddenly vanishedâ¦right outside her door.
