Kellen was the last to join in the feasting as townsfolk and kin gathered in his great hall. He sat down across from Donnelly and his eldest son, Patrick. Thaddeus and Wylie sat next to each other giggling like little girls while Moina sat at the end, holding Breann.

“Moina, the boar is cooked to perfection,” Donnelly said as he tore into its flesh.

With a beaming grin on her face, Moina smiled at him. “Thank ye.”

“Aye, ’tis lovely,” Kellen said as he watched his two sons whispering to each other, which he knew meant they were up to no good.

“Will Ivy be joining us this eve?” Kellen asked.

“My laird, I haven’t seen Ivy since I asked her to go to the spence and retrieve some vegetables. She was rather ill upon the sight of me butchering the boar. She’s probably resting. Shall I send Patrick to fetch her?”

At that moment Thaddeus and Wylie burst out in laughter.

“What is so funny, lads?” their father queried with a cross glare.

“Thaddeus made me do it, Da,” Wylie confessed.

“Shut yer gob, turd.” Thaddeus shoved his brother with his elbow and nearly knocked him off the bench.

“Boys.” Kellen’s voice boomed over the hall. “I want to know where Mistress Ivy is? What have ye done wit’ her?”

Wylie stood and ran toward the kitchen before Thaddeus could catch him. “Da, I know, I know.”

Kellen and Patrick rose, then took off after the boys. They followed them through the kitchen and out the back door to the spence, where Wylie was slapping at his brother to leave him alone. “She’s in there, Da.” The boy pointed to the door.

Quickly, Kellen opened the door and Ivy flew out of the room, nearly knocking Kellen down. “I told you I would get you.” Madder than a wet hen, Ivy chased the boys. She chased them through the heavy snow until she lost her breath. She bent over to catch her breath and from out of nowhere a snowball hit her in the face. She shook off the white powder, then reached down with a devilish grin and scooped up a handful of snow, making it into a perfect tight ball. She straightened and threw the snowball, nailing Thaddeus in the head. “Take that, you brat!”

From behind she felt another snow-filled assault hit her back. In one fluid motion, she grabbed another handful of powder and swung around, hitting Wylie in the face. The battle of the snow continued until Kellen and Patrick reached the battlefield. “Enough!” Kellen’s voice thundered.

In the heat of the moment Ivy whirled around and threw a snowball at Kellen, hitting him in the chest.

Everyone fell silent and stared at the laird. In shock, the boys stood with their mouths open, ready to feel their father’s wrath.

Kellen shook like a wet dog while Ivy held her hand across her mouth to tamp down a laugh. Her eyes grew large when Kellen slowly bent down and gathered a fistful of snow. Ivy shook her head but it was of no use.
