HANNAH HAD BEEN FLIRTING with him their entire trip, he admitted to himself. She’d tucked a fireweed blossom behind her ear and flashed him a grin as she tied her park-service jacket around her slim waist. She was nice enough. Pretty enough, sure. Smart as a whip, as Gene liked to say.

But she wasn’t Adalyn. After two days of tracking grizzly sows, taking sample after sample of scat, Chase was ready to head back to Apgar and Adi. Was she done with her renovations on the first pod? Were they renting them yet? Had she built any other rock sculptures?

That last night they’d been together—when she’d helped him up and he’d felt how good her hand felt in his—well, he’d been perilously close to telling her how much he cared for her. How glad he was that she was home. But she wasn’t ready for such intimacies, he knew. She was healing, still. Not ready to trust any man, let alone risk one of her oldest friendships for something more.

“Storm looks like it’s building,” he said, nodding to the east. “And we haven’t yet dried out from last night’s rain.” They’d been deep asleep when the wind had worked loose the Velcro of their tent flaps, and they’d both awakened in soggy sleeping bags. All morning it had misted, finally clearing that afternoon under the mild warmth of the late June sun.

Hannah paused, scooped a sample into a glass vial, plugged it with a plastic stopper and pulled a pen out of her pocket to note the date, time and location they’d picked it up. She glanced up at him. “Something tells me, partner, that even if there wasn’t rain closing in, you’d be wanting to head back to Apgar.”

He feigned confusion, saying nothing, just reorienting his pack, tightening the waist belt. “Just ready to get back and ditch this camping equipment pack. You’ve got it easy, Madame Scientist. You carry your scope and supplies. But I wager I have about thirty more pounds with all this camping equipment. Especially now that it’s wet.”

“Right. That’s it. The heavy pack.” She rose. “Admit it, Rollins. You’re falling for Adi.”

“What? Adi and I are old friends,” he said, taking to the trail again, assuming she’d catch up.

When she did, she said, “Anyone can see you’re more than old friends.” She paused. “What is it about her, Chase?” She scurried down the path behind him. He knew he was keeping a pace faster than usual, but couldn’t seem to stop himself. “I mean, she’s nice and all...”

Chase bit his lip, for the first time catching a bit of what this might truly be about. The tiniest edge of jealousy in her tone.

“Is it that you can’t resist the idea of winning a girl that twenty-four others couldn’t?”

Irritated, he frowned over his shoulder at her. “You don’t know what you’re talking about, Hannah.”

“Don’t I? Bea told me that you guys watched every single episode of The One.” She laughed a little. Nervously? “Don’t be embarrassed.
