HANNAH HAD BEEN FLIRTING with him their entire trip, he admitted to himself. Sheâd tucked a fireweed blossom behind her ear and flashed him a grin as she tied her park-service jacket around her slim waist. She was nice enough. Pretty enough, sure. Smart as a whip, as Gene liked to say.
But she wasnât Adalyn. After two days of tracking grizzly sows, taking sample after sample of scat, Chase was ready to head back to Apgar and Adi. Was she done with her renovations on the first pod? Were they renting them yet? Had she built any other rock sculptures?
That last night theyâd been togetherâwhen sheâd helped him up and heâd felt how good her hand felt in hisâwell, heâd been perilously close to telling her how much he cared for her. How glad he was that she was home. But she wasnât ready for such intimacies, he knew. She was healing, still. Not ready to trust any man, let alone risk one of her oldest friendships for something more.
âStorm looks like itâs building,â he said, nodding to the east. âAnd we havenât yet dried out from last nightâs rain.â Theyâd been deep asleep when the wind had worked loose the Velcro of their tent flaps, and theyâd both awakened in soggy sleeping bags. All morning it had misted, finally clearing that afternoon under the mild warmth of the late June sun.
Hannah paused, scooped a sample into a glass vial, plugged it with a plastic stopper and pulled a pen out of her pocket to note the date, time and location theyâd picked it up. She glanced up at him. âSomething tells me, partner, that even if there wasnât rain closing in, youâd be wanting to head back to Apgar.â
He feigned confusion, saying nothing, just reorienting his pack, tightening the waist belt. âJust ready to get back and ditch this camping equipment pack. Youâve got it easy, Madame Scientist. You carry your scope and supplies. But I wager I have about thirty more pounds with all this camping equipment. Especially now that itâs wet.â
âRight. Thatâs it. The heavy pack.â She rose. âAdmit it, Rollins. Youâre falling for Adi.â
âWhat? Adi and I are old friends,â he said, taking to the trail again, assuming sheâd catch up.
When she did, she said, âAnyone can see youâre more than old friends.â She paused. âWhat is it about her, Chase?â She scurried down the path behind him. He knew he was keeping a pace faster than usual, but couldnât seem to stop himself. âI mean, sheâs nice and all...â
Chase bit his lip, for the first time catching a bit of what this might truly be about. The tiniest edge of jealousy in her tone.
âIs it that you canât resist the idea of winning a girl that twenty-four others couldnât?â
Irritated, he frowned over his shoulder at her. âYou donât know what youâre talking about, Hannah.â
âDonât I? Bea told me that you guys watched every single episode of The One.â She laughed a little. Nervously? âDonât be embarrassed.
