Chapter Thirty-One
THE WEIGHT OF LOSS
Bradley barely recognized himself as he stood among a sea of wildflowers, a fiery-haired hellion in his arms and a longing in his heart that threatened to bring him to his knees. He could not remember ever having felt more at peace.
And then his lips touched hers, and he cursed and blessed his father for his ill-conceived advice. He could not help the anger he felt at the thought of years wasted because a bitter, old man could not bring himself to forgive his wife for leaving him. Bradley wondered if he would be here in this moment with Lady Harriet if his father had not wrangled that deathbed promise from him.
That thought, though, quickly fled his mind as Lady Harrietâs fingers curled into his hair and she pushed herself onto her toes to be closer. Her lips felt soft and willing under his own, and Bradley marveled at the sensations that shot through him. He could not imagine a kiss with another woman would make him feel this way. The way he felt kissing Harriet.
Bradley could feel her smile against his lips, undoubtedly as surprised as he was himself about this unexpected turn of events. He was surprised but, definitely, pleased. The tips of her fingers brushed against his skin, sending shivers down his spine, and her response to hisâgranted!âinexperienced kiss whispered of eagerness and passion.
There were likely a dozen reasons why he should not be kissing her, but one very good one why he should.
And he didâ¦
â¦and continued to do soâ¦
â¦until Moon suddenly shifted, perhaps to move on to a tastier spot of grass, upending their balance in the process.
Lady Harrietâs hands grasped his shoulders as they stumbled, her eyes wide, but a smile upon her face that had the power to make him forget everything. âCareful or weâllâ!â
With a thud, they landed on the ground, his arms still wrapped around her.
âFall,â Lady Harriet finished with a grin. âAre you all right?â
Bradley nodded. âYou?â He pushed himself back up onto his feet, pulling her along.
Brushing grass from her skirts, Lady Harriet nodded. âIâm fine. No harm done.â Then her eyes met his, and Bradley could have sworn that the air around them hummed with energy. âSo,â she grinned at him, âI claimed your first kiss.â
To his utter mortification, Bradley could feel himself blush. âYou did, yes.â
Her smile deepened as she stepped forward and touched a hand to his heated cheek. âOh, sweet Jack, I do love to see you so flustered.â
âDo you now, my lady?â Bradley challenged. âPerhapsââ
âWould you stop that?â Lady Harriet snapped, her eyes widening in annoyance.
âStop what?â
Her eyes narrowed as she regarded him curiously. âYouâre still doing it, arenât you?â
âDoing what?â Bradley inquired, completely at a loss.
Lady Harriet held his gaze for a moment longer, then huffed out a breath and asked, âYou still think of me as Lady Harriet, do you not?â
Bradley frowned. âThat is who you are, is it not?â
Stepping forward, she grasped his hands, her eyes locked upon his.
