Either she had dozed off (it seemed she couldn’t blink without dozing off) and lost track of the time, or Heidi wasn’t working because Harry returned much faster than Nora expected.

Hearing the car on the gravel driveway, followed by a door slamming, she said to Thor, “Oh, goodie. Our malts.” She smiled, listening to her brother’s footsteps and anticipating the ice-cream treat soon to be sliding down her gullet.

“Uh-uh, Nora,” said Thor. “Not malts.”

To protect her skin from the afternoon sun, she had perched her hat over her face. Lifting it off now, she squinted at the figure standing before her. Her gasp was so loud that Thor, frightened, reached over to take his daughter’s hand.

There was a sudden flurry of sound and motion: names shouted, the scrape of her lawn chair as she tried to propel herself out of it, Thor’s chair toppling as he leapt to his feet to help Nora up, and finally, the sensation of arms around her and her sway into them as they held her tight.

And at the sound of another car coming up the gravel drive, Thor said, “Here’s our malts.”
