The Conceptual Lens

The conceptual lens is an instructional tool that helps teachers create intellectual synergy and deeper levels of thinking and understanding (Erickson, 2002, 2007). It serves to focus each student’s thinking when studying a particular topic. The lens integrates thinking at the conceptual level as students see patterns and connections between facts, concepts, and other applications. Consider the examples in the following feature box showing topics of study without, and then with, a conceptual lens.

Sample Topics of Study and Conceptual Lenses

Topic Possible Conceptual Lens

The Holocaust Humanity/Inhumanity

Global Warming Responsibility/Sustainability

Linear Functions Relationships

The Presidential Election Ideologies/Conflict

Once the student knows the attributes of the lens and has applied it to the particular topic, he or she can transfer the lens and apply it to other topics both within and across disciplines. The conceptual lens engages a student’s personal thinking at the conceptual level. Material is not just “facts to memorize,” but rather “ideas to understand” that are supported by facts. The use of a conceptual lens is another strategy to stimulate synergistic thinking.
