Earned Respect

Contrary to what Janos had expected, becoming a champion in the ring was no easy task. The arena fights took place only once a week, and each duelist was allowed a maximum of three fights per day. Since the director first had to be convinced, it took them two weeks just to get the Paladin admitted to the lowest level. From then on, it took another four weeks until he had worked his way up to the higher league. That was enough for him to get the first privileges.

He had himself released to the practice area to train with Fury every day. It had been a long time since he had seriously worked on his skills. It took a while, but his movements became as smooth as in his best times, his strength increased, and he learned new techniques and tricks.

Kuzaya hardly showed his face during these weeks, so Janos focused on Fury. She was a tough and direct person, but he could handle that well. She appreciated that he did not hesitate to give it his all. He watched some of her duels, in which she stomped her opponents into the ground in an impressive way, even with practice weapons.

When they did some light sparring on the evening of an arena day, he asked her, »Where did you learn to fight? You don’t even learn such moves in the order these days.«

She didn’t let him distract her and didn’t look at him while she talked. »I am the daughter of a green Paladin. You probably know best that transformation magic is not as practical in battle as you might think. A good friend of his at the black Paladins taught him the basics, but he improved on his own. He asked all sorts of people to teach him, even acrobatic trio artists. He combined all that and taught me so that I could be successful as a guard.«

»You were in the Mage Guard? What happened?« he marveled.

»You were a Paladin. The same as with you, I guess. I was Captain of Amaranthys when there was a series of murders. The perpetrator could never be found due to the disregard for laws, unfair investigative methods, and other unpleasant factors that my then-chief investigator, Mohak, took advantage of. He twisted the facts and framed me for it. Now I’m here, and this scumbag is the new captain. I suppose you had the dubious pleasure of meeting him,« she said dismissively.

»That’s a shitty thing to do. They don’t take justice too seriously in Egylan, do they?« he asked.

»When you arrive here as a newcomer, everything looks perfect, colorful, and beautiful. Still, behind the facade, the foundation is crumbling considerably. It is imperative for everyone to be in the most sublime and magnificent realm of Ganomed. If anything doesn’t go as desired and could tarnish this reputation, it is swept under the rug with all possible force. Good people like you and me are the ones who have to pay for it,« Fury said sourly.
