"I thought the whole thing was a nightmare." Lisa placed three coffee cups on the table. She sat for only a moment before jumping up again to load the dishwasher. "I mean, look at this place. Who would live like this?"

"Baby, you need to sit," He moved her away from the trash can and pulled the full bag out. "You were shot."

"Finally get your chance to kill me and you screw it up!" Lisa said jokingly, placing her hands on her hips and looking at AJ. "I knew you always had it in for me and then you go and miss."

AJ chuckled, savoring the taste of real coffee. "You look good, Lisa."

"Don't be hitting on me while I'm in my pajamas," she said and then turned serious. "You know, they said you killed my Darnell. Said you died in the fire out at your house. I never believed it. Then something happened that I still don't understand exactly. It was like I couldn’t see very well and all of a sudden I felt like I had a cold. Worse thing was, I couldn't move – except I did move somehow. When you shot me all the weirdness went away."

"Do you remember it all?" AJ asked. "You know, when you lost control?"

"Every damn minute."

Beverly appeared on the table, her legs hanging off the edge. "That kind of memory is a new wrinkle. For the record, you were listed as a person of interest in Darnell's disappearance but not an official suspect. The investigation was closed after the fire. I've been working on new identities for you and Darnell. You'll like knowing that your long-lost cousin Alvin Jenkins has been found and inherited the family business."

"Alvin?" AJ asked.

Lisa blinked in confusion. "Alvin what?"

"Sorry. Just talking to, well, myself."

"We've got to tell someone," she said. "The government needs to know. This isn't right. People can't go around doing this."

"Lisa, sit," Darnell said. "Cleaning can wait a minute."

"No, it can't. I've been a prisoner for weeks. I trashed, no, they trashed everything. I can't even think in this mess."

Darnell gathered his wife into his arms and held her as she sobbed into his chest. "You need to hear this story, Lisa. There's a lot going on and I don't know if it's safe here. You need to come with us."

"Where?"

"We're at AJ's." Lisa pushed away and looked at him suspiciously. Darnell grinned. "I know what you're thinking."

"What?"

"The whole place burned down but they missed AJ's bunker. Right now, that’s our safest place to be. We can't stay here."

"I need to talk to Aubri and Toby," Lisa said, referencing her daughter and son-in-law. "I said the most horrible things to them. They'll never speak to me again."

"We'll talk to them, too, but not yet. It's actually safer for them to be separated from us," Darnell said.

"I don't understand. Are there more of these, what'd you call them, Korgul?"

"Tens of millions."

Lisa blinked several times before answering. "I'm taking a shower. Keys to the SUV are on the floor in the half-bath.
