Satum Jerin waited for their answers.

Greta, Oheidi, and the skank monster, Orita, sat in a row with the Satum in front of them. Jerin’s brown eyes were warm and kind. After another day on Osolis, Greta had observed he and his wife seemed different to the rest of the court. As did Satum Afranca. Where people like Oheidi and Ogawn wanted to explore, but were held back by fear, the two Satums had stopped fearing what others thought of them somewhere along the line.

“I’ll totally do it!” Greta gave Jerin a beaming grin. “Organizing a fair sounds like fun.”

Oheidi straightened. “I would love to, if my father—”

“I have spoken with your father already, Oheidi. He has given the venture his blessing.”

Greta lifted her brows. Had he really? She doubted it.

They turned to Orita, to where she drummed her fingers on the chair’s armrest. “Me,” she said, raising her chin, “organize food for the villagers.”

“There has to be dancing and music.” Greta clapped her hands together. She’d never been asked to put together a sector ball in Glacium, but always thought she’d be good at it.

Orita’s gaze snapped to her. “This is a Solati fair, not a Bruma . . . whatever you do there.”

“We have only had one fair so far. We’ll be able to put in whatever we like,” Oheidi said. Greta doubted the young woman meant the words as a rebuttal to Orita, but the auburn-haired viper took them that way.

Greta leaned forward and stared down the line at Orita. “Of course. . . . If you’re not up for the challenge, Oheidi and I understand.” She leaned back and gave Jerin a wink.

His face didn’t change, but he, too, glanced at Orita. “I would remind those present that a willingness to complete unsavory tasks is a quality looked for in a Satum.”

Orita stopped thrumming. “Fine, I’ll do it.” She swept out of the room.

Greta blew out her breath when the fire-cow was gone. “Phew, she’s a bundle of fucking joy.”

Oheidi covered her mouth, eyes crinkling.

“You have five days to get the details sorted.” Jerin spoke, rounding his desk. “The palace servants are at your disposal. Please report to me at the end of each week, and I am here to answer any questions you might have.”

Oheidi curtsied and exited the room. Greta followed in her wake, but turned back at the door.

“Olandon isn’t actually making Orita Satum, is he?” Greta had given him more credit than that, but she couldn’t deny the green-headed beast called jealousy that was rearing up.

Jerin’s brown eyes twinkled as he assessed her. Finally, he said, “No, not to my knowledge, though she doesn’t need to know that.”

“It might help motivate her to organize the fair,” Greta said, catching on, a slow smile spreading across her face.

He smiled back. “It might indeed.”

Greta left the room and wound back through the dark passages until she heard the clanging of swords ahead. Making a sharp right turn, she found herself standing at the top of a stairway descending into a wide, open training yard.
