Of course, not every phenomenon can be explained by the power of faith. Even a scientific mind must sometimes admit that there’s such a thing as magic. For example, take our pregnancy chair.

One year, when our office staff was growing, we purchased a used desk chair from a nearby office furniture store. Within a month, three of our staff members, all of whom had used the chair, became pregnant unexpectedly. We chuckled at the coincidence and made little jokes about it.

Soon the patients heard about the chair and made remarks like, “Let me sit in it because I’ve been trying to get pregnant.” Four of our patients became pregnant within the year.

As word spread—and one or two more pregnancies occurred—the jokes died away. Now we had a new problem: no one would sit in the chair. With some relief, we sold it back to the furniture store. Several months later we heard that two store employees unexpectedly became pregnant. I did not have the nerve to ask if they had used our chair.
