Chapter Twenty-Six

Noah

It took close to twenty-four hours for Aidan Byrne to open his eyes and return to his family. A deep sigh of relief spread among his wife and children when the first words spoken by him was a question on how the Sabres had done over the weekend.

“Jesus, Dad,” Noah chuckled. “You gave us the scare of a lifetime, old man, and now you wanna know how your team did?”

“Nearly dying…” his dad coughed, “makes you get your priorities straight,” he replied. It was in that moment that Noah knew with certainty that his dad was going to be just fine. Because his sense of humor was intact.

“When wasn’t the Sabres your number one priority?” Noah’s mom whispered, brushing fruitlessly at the tears that wouldn’t stop streaming down her cheeks. Noah’s sisters were crying too, and it dawned on Noah that he wished Joe were here. With him. He belonged with him. Pulling out his phone from his back pocket, he pulled up his text thread with Joe and started typing.

Me: My dad just woke up. Asked about the Sabres. I think he’s gonna be okay.

Noah took a couple of steps backwards, his sisters and mother fussing all over his dad, nudging him to drink some water in a plastic cup from a straw. Someone notified the attending nurse that his dad was awake, and soon a horde of medical professionals spilled into the small room and started taking his dad’s blood pressure, checking his eyesight, poking, and prodding at him.

Noah’s phone vibrated in his pocket, and he pulled it out, hoping it was Joe. It had been hard to let him go this morning. Waking up beside him, Joe wrapped around him—well, halfway on top of him—had made him want to ignore his alarm and just disappear beneath the comforter again with this warm body that smelled of sleep and carried faint memories of the night before. But Joe had to meet up with some friends and Noah needed to be at the hospital when visiting hours started.

Joe: That’s amazing. I was thinking about you all morning, titi. *wink emoji*

Me: Yeah?

Joe: Of course. When can I see you again?

Me: Soon, I hope. Probably be here for most of the day though.

Joe: Of course. Be with your people.

Your people. Such a strange way to refer to someone’s family, but Noah kind of liked it. It sounded like someone who was there for you. Not just because you shared the same genes or fate had thrown you together. No, it sounded like more. Like someone you actively chose to surround yourself with. Noah couldn’t help wondering if Joe could be part of his people one day. If he even wanted to or if Noah was too much work. He knew that he’d told Joe that he wanted to come out but what if Joe got impatient and couldn’t wait? Wouldn’t wait.

Sucking in a deep breath, he focused on his phone. He hated when his thoughts started spinning out of control like this.
