CHAPTER

TWENTY-ONE

MELODY

The hours dragged out to days without any success to Ramirez’s experiments.

Melody wished she could do something, anything, to help, but they weren’t working on anything she had expertise in, or any working knowledge. It was a terrible feeling. She’d spent so much time working to earn and pay for her PhD and here she was, the most educated person in the room, and the most useless one.

She had to admit she found it extremely ironic. Melody and her friends had cracked more than a few jokes at the expense of people who went into the military not being the sharpest tools in the shed. And just look at how useful that degree’s proving now.

There had to be something she could do. Maybe if we can talk to Andy he can think of something with all of this alien tech. Or maybe the general is hanging on to something he hasn’t shared yet.

Buck looked up at her like he knew she was planning something. The dog hopped up, planting his forelegs on her lap and poking his snout against her cheek.

Melody cracked a smile and rubbed at Buck’s ear. She took a cautious look around to make sure no one was looking before whispering, “What do you think, Buck? Should we go pay a visit to the general’s office?”

Buck let out a quiet little bark.

“Good boy.” She placed a quick kiss on Buck’s head and headed out of the command center. Everyone was so deep into their work they barely noticed her slipping away.

The trip to the general’s impromptu office wasn’t a long one from the command center. It was just a few halls down, where one of the professors’ larger offices had suddenly become vacant with his induction into the games.

Melody paused at the door, then looked to Buck. “Best behavior, pup. Got that?”

Buck just smiled up at her, wagging his tail.

She shook her head, groaning inwardly at herself. Why do I even pretend this adorable furball can understand me? Melody knocked on the door. “General Merrick, sir, it’s Melody.”

“Come in, Miss Reynolds,” Merrick called.

Melody slipped inside. The office hadn’t really changed much since the last time she was in it. The shelves full of astronomy books remained intact. The photos of the professor's family were still up along with some framed photos of distant nebulas. About the only thing that had changed was the desk.

The ancient beige computer the former occupant of this office insisted on using at all times had been replaced with probably the most heavy-duty laptop Melody had ever seen. Originally she’d thought it was just a military suitcase for guns or something, but it was just one of the many portable computers the Space Force had brought with them. The drab olive behemoth on the general’s desk with a whopping three monitors was one of the larger ones Melody had seen.

Merrick raised an inquisitive eye from behind his laptop. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”

Melody wasn’t sure how to voice her question, or if it was even a fair one.
