It would be silly to say we are proud of the boys. Everybody knows that already. The feeling that “the Oakville is our Ship” has spread throughout the town like wildfire until now everybody has it. Many feel that the crew are practically their own boys.[5]

This was the same man who had declared over a year earlier that “everyone in the district would be awaiting word of Oakville’s exploits.” Their faith and hope were well founded. Who could have foreseen that in just over a year Oakville would again be making headlines for such a distinct and meritorious act? Oakville and its crew had raised the spirits of their community and delivered the hope that the town — and nation for that matter — so deeply needed. Naturally, they were ecstatic that their adopted “sons” were heroes.

The number of awards made to HMCS Oakville’s crew was greater than usual. However, King had actually recommended 17 crewmembers for recognition. As author Mac Johnston notes: “This figure, which did not include the skipper, was impossibly high as King, a World War I veteran, should have known.”[6] That being said, one can find little fault in a captain nominating every crewmember he felt deserving of recognition.

Listed below are the recipients and their citations for each respective decoration as they appeared in the newspaper and naval press release:
