The one who had been more than brushed by the regulator didn’t live long, thankfully. The suit was pretty much intact, which Sarge explained was more due to the quality of the vac

suit.

A half dozen others who had stayed by the kid’s

side and not heeded my warning had taken suit damage by the rock spewed at them. But we patched their suits quick enough that Sarge assured us they’d live.

The emergency crew dealt with the mess as Sarge showed us how to “assess the damage” so we could get back to work. “Survival of the fittest, people,” Sarge said. “Think you are smarter than me? That is a great way to kill yourself… But understand this, my job is to teach you how not to kill yourselves or those around you. You have a job to do—and the shift is nowhere close to being over, but if you are an idiot, you will be dead rather quickly.

“You lot are alive and unhurt because you either moved away from the fool as soon as Grime, there, correctly warned you—or were lucky enough to be

nowhere near him when he decided to commit

suicide.”

He pointed at the damage done to the kid’s regulator, showed us how to check our regulators for damage due to the spewn rock. “There are times when you will need to use the regulator at maximum… I will demonstrate when and how you safely do that when the time is right. Now, anyone else, who wants to play

cowboy with the equipment?”

There were no takers.

Sarge said, “Grime, as you and your friends are not dead yet, go shovel onto the conveyors all the debris. We will get back to using the regulators against the wall after everything has been cleared. Oh, and, everyone, stay clear of that gouge in the floor. We will be learning how to compact and repair warren floors a bit sooner than planned, but not this shift…”
