CHAMPIONS

For a split-second I thought I were all right, then me brain said, ‘Go down, you daft bastard.’ I tried me best.

Richard Dunn, boxer, on his fifth and final knockdown against Muhammad Ali in 1976, quoted in Daily Mail, 2009

The story of Yorkshire sport is one of rise and fall, repeat to fade, encapsulated in a Halifax scaffolder’s heroically flawed 1976 fight against Ali. Reflecting the pride, ties, ambition and neglect of its communities, Yorkshire’s sporting teams have provided a microcosm of the county’s past. Sport has also shrunk tribal boundaries, so the insider– outsider conflict is played out as an internecine scrap. Dunn lost his Ali fight money in a Scarborough hotel and then fell 50 feet off a North Sea oil rig. His ankle was hanging off but he walked again – in constant pain. That’s Yorkshire sport.
