The blank stare on Maddoxâs face made me smile. Truthfully, I needed it. Today had been horrible. One of my patients died in their sleep, so that had me sick all day. That was the biggest part of being a caregiver that I hated. It sucked getting close to patients and having to grieve them when they left the earth.
When I left work, my car cut off. I knew it was having some wiring issues, but usually, when it cut off, it would cut right back on. This time, it didnât. I ended up having to call GEICO so they could tow it to the nearest mechanic. On the way there, Maddox called, and when he found out where I was, he told me heâd picked me up. I turned him down, but he insisted, so I sent him my location.
Even though I could afford to pay for the issues with my car, I didnât want to. I had a thing about spending large amounts of money at one time. It wasnât that I necessarily hoarded money, but I just liked to have a lot of it saved. It didnât matter how much I told myself it was for emergencies, I still couldnât bear to part with it when I had an actual emergency.
I was so deep in my thoughts over what I was going to do that I didnât notice Maddox had taken me to the theater instead of straight home. He figured seeing a movie would help cheer me up, and he was right. It wasnât until weâd grabbed a few snacks and headed into the theater that he offered to pay for me to get my car fixed, and the fact that I declined had him giving me a blank stare.
âNo?â he repeated, scooting closer to me.
âYes. No.â
His head tilted, as if I was speaking a foreign language. âWhat do you mean, no?â
I giggled softly. âI mean, no, I donât want you to pay to have my car fixed.â
âWhy not?â
I shrugged, sitting back in my seat. Maddox continued to sit up so he could get a full view of my face.
âI have the money to pay for it, but Iâm choosing not to. That doesnât mean I want or need you to. I can take a Lyft to work or if I want to go out, and if I want to drive myself, I can use my parentsâ spare car. Iâm just cheap as hell, but Iâll pay to have it fixed when I get my next check, I suppose. Plus, you know I hate driving, so this is like a break for me anyway.â
Maddox softly sat back in his seat. His eyebrows were still wrinkled as he stared into the distance, making me laugh again.
âYou act like this is the first time anyone has ever turned down your money.â
âIt is.â
His confession made my smile fall. Now I understood why he felt used at times. I was aware of the financial weight that was on him, but I was also aware of the fact that he enjoyed providing.
