Chapter Twelve

It was one hell of a party, Noah thought to himself, as he accepted the latest in a series of beautifully carved tankards filled with ale. Yeah, this was ale with a capital “A”, for sure, and his urge to giggle reminded him that it was probably stronger than just about anything he’d indulged in back in the days when he got his beers in six-packs.

Rich, ripe with the taste of something that might have been hops...his mind was a bit fuzzy on the details...it might also have had a hint of cherries in there somewhere. He wrote himself a mental note to check into how ale was made over here in 1813, and then promptly forgot it as Abby walked toward him.

God, she was beautiful, and he shifted his position so she wouldn’t see what that thought was doing to what she probably called his “nether regions.”

“Are you enjoying yourself?” She sat on a low stool next to his and joined him in watching the dance that had begun around the fire.

“They sure know how to have a good time,” he grinned.

The music was by turns soft and wistful and then wild and exciting, guitars, violins, and occasionally voices, all raised in joy. One lad, a budding drummer, was sweating profusely as he kept pace with each and every melody on the current version of bongos.

It wasn’t a rock concert, but for Noah it came damn close. Now if he could only teach them the lyrics to “Stairway to Heaven”...

Abby was sipping on a small tankard of something, and to his surprise, she leaned against him. “It’s lovely, isn’t it? Seeing everyone having such fun...”

He narrowed his eyes and sniffed at her drink. “What’s in there?”

“Just cider.” She giggled, a surprising sound that charmed him.

“Uh huh. Just cider?” He’d bet his last dollar that the cider she was drinking wasn’t anything like the weak apple juice that pretended to be cider in his time. His hostess, his guardian lady friend, was getting shit faced.

He loved it.

“Well,” he shifted so that he could put his arm around her and let her lean on his shoulder, “I miss things like this, just hanging out, having a good time.”

“Mmm.” She gazed up at him, a smile lingering on her lips, her expression as relaxed and happy as he’d ever seen it. And for a second her happiness glowed so brightly it took the breath right out of his lungs.

“My Lady.”

The moment vanished as Tomas appeared.

“May I join you for a minute? There’s something I need to ask, if I may.” He pulled up another low stool.

Noah started to get up. “I’ll leave you two to talk.”

“Please stay, you might want to hear this also.” Tomas stared at him.

“Of course,” she straightened, leaving Noah a little saddened. He missed her warmth.

“Drina has told me about your situation. The Dower House and the current Earl’s behavior toward you.”

“I see.” She sighed. “Yes. Drina knows what happened, as do many in the area.” She lifted her chin.
