Hixom’s wife was waiting, as usual, for him to arrive at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. She seemed, as usual, to be glad to see him. Jake went through the motions of smiling, hugging, kissing and telling her how much he had missed her.

It always took him three or four days to recover from jet lag. He would be wide awake at three in the morning and dozing off early in the evening. They had a place in the country on three acres. It was a beautiful area west of Fort Worth, with rolling hills and lots of live oak and red oak trees. The yard was always a mess each time he came home. His wife did nothing outside and refused to pay someone to mow the lawn or do anything else around the house. She even refused to subscribe to the trash pick-up service that serviced the neighborhood once a week, so all the trash bags were stacked in the garage, waiting for Jake to get home and haul them off. Jake suspected his wife had something wrong with her physically. She was constantly losing teeth, and had lost several more since the last time he had seen her. She didn’t want any type of dental appliance to replace them. She hated all dentists. She told him she would one day get them all pulled out and get a set of dentures made, just like her grandmother had done years ago. If it was good enough for her grandma, then it was good enough for her now. She had sores on her feet, which made walking painful and took a long time to heal. She refused to go to any doctor. She relied on quack medicines and weird, non-traditional methods of healthcare, which did no good. Jake also suspected his wife had some sort of mental issues. She had become more and more reclusive over the years. She stayed home almost all the time with the blinds shut on all the windows, except for two in the living room which looked out over the rolling ranch land which stretched out behind their property. She spent her days sitting on the
