But still, oh, that mermaid and the glorious mystery it represented. The Nexus gives us these gifts sometimes, alien memories and realistic dreams from worlds that few dared imagine. To find one and broker it is the making of a legend: twenty years ago Kladdich Omerhyer sold the memories of a planet, perfectly preserved at the moment of its destruction in a supernova; thirty years before that the legendary Amis Zethal acquired the memories of a phoenix, a burning globe of embers and ash that carried recollections from endless eternities of death and rebirth. We idolize these men, carry the memory of their names across the great floor. They are heroes, men who show us what the Nexus may one day be.

There is fancy to it perhaps, or an element of fate. No-one was entirely sure where either memory came from or if they were even real, but everyone accepts the possibility of their existence. We call it a quirk of the Nexus: the same mechanisms that allowed us to segregate memories for trade gives us glimpses of somewhere else.
