Chapter 30

“Want some cake, Lori? One of the ladies from church dropped it off yesterday. It’s homemade red velvet.”

Lori’s eyes went wide. “I’m stuffed from the lasagna, but I don’t think I can turn down a piece of that.”

I laughed and served up three pieces of cake for the table.

“How long are you here for?” Matthew asked before taking a bite of cake. He smiled, pointing to the red velvet slice with his fork and nodded his approval.

“I have to head back tonight. I’m still not finished Christmas shopping and Mom wants me to go with her tomorrow.” She took a bite of the dessert and moaned. “This is wonderful. Better than Mom’s. And you can never tell her.”

I laughed. “I won’t. So what’s your big news?”

Lori set her fork down and looked between me and Matthew. “I got a job. A dream job actually. It’s being an assistant to a really rich guy in California. His last assistant is a friend of mine and she’s getting married and moving to France, so he needs someone.” She sat back and waited for our reaction.

“Does it pay good?” Matthew arched his brow.

Lori smiled and nodded. “Six figures starting out plus an apartment near his house.”

My mouth dropped. “Six figures. Wow, that’s great!”

Lori clapped her hands together. “I know! And I’ll be living by the beach, which is my dream while getting paid a ton by some old rich guy.” She shrugged. “Who knows, maybe he’ll fall in love with me and ask me to marry him.”

I snorted. “Lori, you wouldn’t marry someone you were not in love with.”

She arched her brow. “I’ve been in love too many times. I don’t believe in love any more. It never lasts. But money does.”

Matthew barked out a laugh. “Not if you blow it, it doesn’t.”

Lori shrugged. “Anyway, I’m moving to California in January.” She reached over and squeezed my hand. “I’m glad I got to see you before I leave.”

I nodded. “Maybe we can come out and see you. I mean, Matthew’s parents live in California.”

“Oh yeah, what part?” Lori took another bite.

“Montecito.” Matthew said before finishing off his cake.

Lori gasped. “You’re kidding! That’s where I’m moving.”

My eyes widened. “Really. What a wonderful coincidence.”

Matthew nodded. “Maybe we will have to make a trip out there. Who knows, maybe we can talk your grandparents into going with us.”

That night as I lay in bed I was filled with a mix of emotions. I was sad but excited for Lori. It seemed like her dreams were finally coming true. I was grateful for Matthew’s position at church and my job, but sad that it seemed that I was living my adult life without my grandparents to see all the great things that were happening for us.

As I drifted off to sleep, I wondered what else was about to change for us as well.
