CHAPTER 17

Another week went by, and we finally started the single digit countdown. My last week as a single gal. Also the last week of my short-lived career as a street musician which, by the way, had been successful beyond my expectations to the point where I continued singing a week after reaching my original goal.

On one of those last days, I was covering my guitar under a tarp in a forgotten corner in the garage when my mother’s voice startled me.

“I didn’t hear you coming in.”

“Jesus! Mom! You’re going to kill me one day!” I exclaimed with a quick jolt.

“That’s a vote of confidence! What are you doing in here?”

“I was…just…looking for a hammer to…fix a nail in my wall,” I stammered, hating every word in the process. “Where’s Dad?” I asked, reaching out for the hammer.

“He’s with Antonio, across the street, checking his car’s brakes or something,” she explained. “The seamstress called; the dress will be here by tomorrow noon. She was worried, and I have to say, I almost panicked too. She had to take in another inch on your waist and adjust the measurements of your corset.”

“Isn’t that a good thing?”

“Not really. Are you eating lunch at all? You keep losing weight,” she said, shooting an assessing look at me, from head to toe.

“I am eating, Mom. It must be wedding stress.” I didn’t hesitate to answer her question because it was true. Compared to a standard bride, I was eating lunch, snacks, and way too many muffins after a whole day of singing. My apparent weight loss had more to do with my long walks and the unintended extra exercise I was doing.

“You need to keep an eye on it. Hopefully all that stress will melt under the Sicilian sun.”

“I’m not sure if…” I rolled my eyes to give her a mischievous look. “We’re going to spend that much time outside.”

“I don’t need a detailed schedule of your travel plans,” she interjected. “Just make sure you eat and sleep well, get some vitamin D, and come back with a nice tan,” she said, walking with me towards the living room. “Oh! And there’s something waiting for you in your bedroom.”

“Really? And what’s that?”

“If I knew, I’d tell you. I hate playing guessing games.”

“And you’re walking with me because…you’re dying to know,” I said as a joke, looking at her expectant, playful dark brown eyes.

“Okay, I’ll leave you alone. I’m busy in the kitchen anyway,” she replied, standing at the base of the stairs. “Supper will be ready in fifteen minutes or so.”

I walked up to my bedroom where I found a small package wrapped in craft paper and tied with a red bow, on my bed. I smiled at his name, handwritten in the card. From Diego. I didn’t think I could hold any more love for those five letters together.

I sat down at the edge of the bed and opened the box to find a row of four blue, pink, and purple French macarons, and a device that I didn’t remember ever having seen before in real life.
