Some 5 km southeast of Ponferrada, on the Camino de Santiago, this excellent stone village, famous for its embutidos – chorizo, salchichón, and the like – sits by a babbling river, scene of a frenetic water-fight during the village fiestas. It’s full of bodegas that have been converted into bars, where the typical order is a cheap local wine that comes with a hunk of bread and slice of chorizo. It’s particularly popular on Sundays with folk from Ponferrada. There’s a pilgrim hostel here, and plenty of accommodation and eating options. For pilgrims it may make a more relaxing stay than Ponferrada itself.
