Gathering my children was not a difficult task, per se, but it was truly a challenge not to broach the tension among them as we walked to the nearby Velbrun estate beyond the palace walls.

Tanner was with us, his sharp eyes keeping watch alongside my own and Daka’s, although my daughter’s suspicious gaze certainly did not exclude our dragon-blooded Protector. The group of guards surrounding us kept the surrounding crowd of peasantry at bay, but I still doubted their worth in the face of an assassin meant for me.

Natakia and Daka stood on either side of me, away from each other and barely acknowledging the other’s presence, with Dalton deep within his own writings even as we walked.

“Dalton, how are your plans for the shop coming along?” It was an easy question, having not heard yet about what aid Penelope ended up providing him.

Dalton barely looked up from his journal. “A man by the name of Frant John has been hired to work the shop while I’m away, and Aunt Penelope has given me a few leads on deals to follow up with.”

He paused, mid-stroke of his pen, before he shook his head.

“She wouldn’t give me the discounts I wanted,” he said, obviously annoyed. “Still, nothing I can’t deal with by going through with my rental plans. For every noble, there’s an upper-middle-class peasant that wants their abode to look more noble for a fee every month.”

He muttered something about differing cultures and needing to integrate subscription as a payment model within the area, but I wasn’t entirely sure what he meant by it. Perhaps something from Earth?

Nodding, I smiled. “I’m glad you’re so invested in the shop. I think you’ll go very far, Dalton.”

My son glanced up at me from his journal, a strange look in his eyes, before he looked away without betraying anything else on his face.

“And what about you, Natakia?” I turned to my desert flower. “How did the perfume shopping go?”

She lightly sniffed, looking away from me without letting go of my hand as we walked. “You would know if you came along, Dad.”

I felt a sting in my heart at the unfairness of the remark. I had offered to go, but Natakia had recently been reluctant to have me along, even as I made an effort to do more things with her. Doh said she was just in a mood, but it felt like my efforts to reconnect with my daughter seemed to push her away more than they helped.

Perhaps she did not think my attempts were genuine? The words she had spoken to me that night—I wish I had had a better response to them.

“You will look grand at the Rose Gala, Natakia,” I said, gently rubbing the back of her palm with my thumb. “I hope you will still allow me to walk you in.”

Natakia didn’t spare me a glance as Dalton had, but she nodded and spoke with a softness that belied its fragility. “Of course I want you to walk me in, Dad.
