The Sermon
Father dámaso began slowly, intoning in a hushed voice: âEt spiritum tuum bonum dedisti, et manna tuum non prohibuisti ab ore eorum, et aquam dedisti eis in siti. And thou gavest thy good Spirit to teach them, and thy manna thou didst not withhold from their mouth, and thou gavest them water for their thirst.â
âWords which the Lord spoke through the mouth of Esdras, in the second book, ninth chapter, twentieth verse.â
Father Sibyla threw the preacher a surprised look; Father Manuel Martin grew pale and swallowed hard: this text was better than his.
Whether it was because Father Dámaso noticed the impression he had made or because he was still hoarse, the fact is that he coughed several times. His hands clasped the sill of the pulpit. Over his head was the Holy Ghost, newly painted: white, neat, with rosy little claws and beak.
âExcellency (this to the Governor), most virtuous priests, Christians, brothers in Jesus Christ!â
Here he made a solemn pause, his eyes roaming over the congregation, whose attention and concentration satisfied him.
The first part of the sermon would be in Spanish; the rest in Tagalog: as the Gospel said of the Apostles, âloquebantur omnes lingues, they shall speak in all tongues.â
After the salutation and the pause, he raised his right hand in the, direction of the altar, keeping his eyes on the Governor, then he slowly crossed his arms without uttering a word; but jumping into activity from this calm he threw back his head and pointed to the main door of the church, his hand sawing the air with such violence that the sacristans interpreted his gesture to be an order to shut the doors, and did so, while the lieutenant grew uneasy and wondered if he should leave or stay. But the preacher was already speaking with a voice that was strong, full, and resonant. No doubt about it: the old housekeeper was a good doctor. âRadiant and resplendent is the altar, and spacious the portals of this church; but between them is the air that will transport the holy and divine message that will spring forth from my lips. Listen, then, with the ears of the soul and the heart so that the words of Our Lord may not fall on stony ground and be eaten up by the birds of Hell, but rather that you may sprout and thrive like holy seed in the field of our Venerable and Seraphic Father St. Francis. Ye great sinners, captives of those Moro pirates of the spirit who prowl the seas of eternal life in the powerful vessels of the flesh and the world, and you who, bound with the shackles of lust and concupiscence, row in the galleys of infernal Satan, behold with reverend remorse one who rescues souls from the devilâs thrall, an intrepid Gideon, a valiant David, a victorious Roland of Christianity, the Constable of Heaven, braver than all the Constabulary put together; present and future (then, noticing that the commanding officer was frowning)âyes,
