'Hello?'
A voice echoed in Michael's skull, sparking fresh jolts of pain as it bounced around inside.
'Hellooo?'
He didn't want to get up. It was early; plenty of time for more sleep before work.
'Hey! Are you all right?'
His eyes snapped open. Colours swam around his blurred vision, which struggled to focus on the fuzzy shapes in front of him.
'What … where am I?' he whispered hoarsely.
A shadowy blur right up at his face moved away sharply, pointing a long, dark object at him.
'Don't move! Who are you?'
Michael groaned, his head swaying with dizziness.
'What happened …' he murmured.
The blur shuffled.
'I … you had a nasty knock on the back of the head. Erm … you're not one of them, are you?' it asked, a thinly-veiled undercurrent of nervousness threading the question. It watched him, waiting for something. Michael curled forward, trying to sit up, not really hearing the blur's questions. Pain stabbed at his temples with a renewed vigour.
'Whoa, whoa, whoa – take it easy,' said the blur. 'You might have a concussion.'
Michael smacked his dry lips.
'No time. I've got to get going,' he mumbled, trying to get up but falling limply back onto the floor.
Squinting at his watch, the numbers drifting in and out of focus, he could just about read the number four at the front of the row of digits. Just four hours remained.
'Oh God!' he spluttered, 'I've got to get back!'
The blur tipped its head, confused.
'What? Why? What's going on?' it said, the hint of nervousness rising more to fright.
'I'm running out of time – I've got to find someone before it's – it's too late!'
Michael tried to think for a moment who it was he was trying to find and what it would be too late for, but all he could get from his brain was garbled nonsense. Shaking his head, he tried to realign his thoughts back into some kind of recognisable order, but all he got for his troubles was the rumble of a fresh headache. He winced.
'Have you got any pain killers?' he groaned.
The blur didn't answer for a few seconds, as if weighing up the validity of the request. Finally, it spoke.
'Yeah – sure. Of course. Hang on a moment.' It moved away, before returning almost instantly. 'Don't move.'
The blur disappeared, leaving Michael on his own. He sighed, rubbing his eyes in an attempt to massage some sense into them. Blinking, he let them relax, and soon, crisp lines began to form. To his left, a table and chair set dominated the medium-sized room, and to the right a washing machine and dishwasher were straddled by cupboards. Overhead, bright spotlights funnelled throbbing pain straight to the back of his retinas and he immediately looked back down again. As he did, his eyes traced the frame of a doorway on the opposite side of the room that had small fragments of splintered door still hanging from it, and a body lying in a pool of blood in front of it.
'Here you go. I got you a glass of water, too.
