“Just admit it, Carla. Who is he?”

“Can you please give the nurse your disgusting cup of urine first before talking to me?”

Mary giggled and walked over to the lab tech station, giving me at least ten seconds of peace. We were at a medical clinic in Fort Bonifacio, getting our annual physical exams done together, as per tradition. Call it odd if you like, but when Mary’s career took off and she had her family, this was the only regular thing we both took the time to do together. Plus, Mary arranged everything for me so all I had to do was show up.

Next up, chest x-rays. She took a seat beside me in the waiting room and started the grilling again.

“Carla, please, if it’s a secret I’ll keep it a secret.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Come on. After how you totally sabotaged everything with Baron, I’m sure it’s because you’ve got someone already but you’re not telling me. Tonio told me you’ve been asking weird questions. And Tammy thinks she saw you with a guy in Salcedo last week. Who is he?”

Mary was a relationship nut. She talked about the topic constantly. When we were single, it was about guys she was interested in. When she met Lloyd, we analyzed every single move he made. When they got married, she wrote me lengthy emails about their adjustment period. Now that they’d been married a while, she would share her insecurities and annoyances. When her own relationship didn’t need scrutiny, she talked about everyone else’s.

What was the point in mentioning this thing with Dante? She was just going to talk me out of it.

“So you’re going to be like this. Fine.”

“Enough about me. Can’t we talk about our birthday party? I sent you the receipts for the venue rental, and Tammy cleared my menu after I arranged the food tasting for her.”

Mary pouted, not wanting to change the subject. “You know I’m concerned about you, right? I want you to find the right person, that’s all.”

“I’m thankful for that, Mary.” I wished I could tell her that this guy—someone she never would have chosen for me—was making me so happy. That I had no idea how long it would last, but at least it wasn’t full of doubt and drama.

I nearly caved and said something, but then she was called into the x-ray room. Good thing too, because Mary was probably not the best person to tell first. I wanted support and encouragement, and I wasn’t sure she was going to give me that. Better bounce this off someone else, before telling anyone in the Marriage Club.
