Jimmy stepped slowly forward, cautiously placing his feet. Theo was behind him, not moving so quietly. He frowned and glanced back at the shorter man.

“Dude, be quiet. If we’re gonna hunt, you gotta be quiet,” he hissed.

Theo paused, looking around guiltily, and then nodded. Jimmy rolled his eyes. He had his spear lifted, ready to launch. His stomach growled and his empty hand came up to clutch at his gut. Hunger hurt. For the first time in his life, he experienced hunger, gut clawing hunger. He was a big man and in only a few days he’d do just about anything to eat. He’d have blamed the others in the group if he hadn’t seen with his own eyes they were starving as well. Most of the men were looking especially gaunt since their bodies required more calories.

Over the course of the days he’d been here, he’d watched the interactions between these strangers. He’d seen how the men had acted with the women and vice versa. The men’s actions weren’t at all how his father taught him. Why was that? In the most stressful moments of their lives, the men didn’t blame the women for their weakness. Why? His father said his mother was a weak and shameless woman. Harold Baltimore said all women were that way. Useless, except in bed. Yet he’d watched the interactions of the group. Was his father wrong? Had he been wrong all along? Anger filled Jimmy. He needed another pill, he needed oblivion from thought. His stomach was screaming its need and now his brain was trying to puzzle out the missteps of his life. He didn’t need that.

The only thing that kept him sane was the pills in Theo’s backpack. That asshole Oliver had grudgingly shared the food, but only after everyone else had gotten their share. Jimmy saw he was given the same as their portions, but the amount of food just wasn’t enough for a man his size.

“You don’t help the group, playa. You don’t gather food or water. You sit on your ass, stoned. Why should the rest of us go without food while we work to survive, just to drag your sorry ass along? You feel me?” Oliver said.

Jimmy hated the man. Hated all of them, in fact. He didn’t understand them. None had stood up for him, not even Theo. Theo didn’t stand up for himself either. He was useless. Yet that niggling thought in his brain asked him, Do I see the situation wrong? Am I the only one that isn’t right? Are the rest of the people right and I’m wrong? Did Dad feed me a load of bullshit?

He shoved the thoughts aside. His brain was hurting.

He could hunt, how freaking hard could hunting be? He just didn’t want to get eaten by one of those freaking dinosaurs.

Fuckers, he thought savagely.

“I should kill you all in your sleep,” he muttered.

“What?” Theo asked from behind.

“Nothing. Dude, be quiet.”

Ahead, he heard rustling and he grinned. At last. He walked faster, crouching with his arm raised and ready.
