Chapter 20 Aftermath

Mercy buried her head in her hands and rocked from side to side. Silence enveloped the arena. Mercy’s whole world collapsed in on her. Blood seeped into the sand around the super trope’s body.

Rose… Rose… my angel… my sister—

Mercy fell to one side, her face in the dirt. She closed her eyes and withdrew to the safe place within.

It should’ve been me Rose, me—

A strong breeze picked up pulling at the crude flags scattered around the arena. Mercy’s eyes registered the flags, then drifted to the sky. The clouds were white, unblemished, like the clouds she remembered from somewhere good, somewhere before. If only she could go back, to years ago, she could warn people, fix this mess, this… agony.

A low murmur passed through the arena like a breeze in a forest. It grew instead of abating, grew in strength, swelling to a roar, a wave crashing on rocks. Mercy frowned, registering the sound, processing it, she lowered her eyes to the arena and the super trope’s body.

It’s moving, it’s… what? Reanimating?

The super trope’s body jerked once, twice, a three times, sliding up the spear shaft. It looked wrong. Mercy pulled a face and sat up, her fingers clawing at the ground.

What the fuck?

The super trope’s torso slid up the spear, its arms hanging limply at its sides. A foot appeared in the bloody space beneath, followed by a leg, then another leg.

Rose?

An unrecognisable figure rolled out from under the super trope. Rose was drenched in trope blood, blood so dark it was black, she was clutching the knife. She lay on the dirt for a few seconds then struggled to her feet, shaking.

Rose, you’re alive?

Rose stood, glaring at the roaring crowd. She turned to the Colonel and took a step towards the platform. The Colonel’s face was slack, his eyes wide, his mouth open like a child. Rose spat on the ground and glared at the Colonel and the skull queen. Rose raised her arms releasing a long, wild scream.

The crowd went silent, Rose’s scream echoed around the arena. She twisted her body around as if in pain then, without warning, swung fast, throwing the knife at the platform. The blade flew through the air missing the Colonel, instead hitting the skull queen in the chest. The skull queen clutched at the blade, a look of surprise on her face. She sank to her knees at the edge of the platform a silent scream on her lips. Her momentum carried her over the edge to the arena floor below. The crowd looked on horrified, their throats giving rise to a collective groan.

The chained tropes, still scrabbling at the arena’s wall snapped their heads towards the fresh meat. As one, they lurched towards the squirming skull queen. Her headdress quivered, the skulls on her gown clacked together as she struggled. Blood oozed from her chest wound staining her hands and the ground. The first trope reached her and sank to its knees, its hunger ignited by the blood. Seconds later the others joined in the feeding frenzy.
