Teleconverters

Teleconverters are magical devices that multiply the magnification of your lenses by 1.4X, 1.7X, 2X, or 3X, but at a price. Fit between your prime or zoom lens and the camera body, teleconverters include optics that magnify the image, changing a lens with a true focal length of 200mm into a 280mm, 340mm, 400mm, or 600mm lens. They also rob you of a little sharpness (with expensive Nikon converters) or a lot of sharpness (with some inexpensive third-party models). You also lose a half f-stop of illumination with a 1.4X model, and up to three full stops with a 3X converter. That’s a double whammy, exacting a cost in the maximum aperture department (converting an f/2.8 lens into an f/8 lens with a 3X adapter), especially when you must use an even smaller aperture to regain some of the sharpness you lose. Because the D80’s autofocus system requires the equivalent of at least f/5.6 worth of light, you can lose autofocus capabilities, too. Teleconverters are priced between $100 and $400, and work best when you use them with the vendor’s own recommended lenses. Stick with the 1.4X and 1.7X models if possible. The “price” may be too high otherwise.
