Chapter 13

NO CHANGING THE PAST

NADIA

CIAN’S EYES LIGHT up when we step into the hallway leading to The Haven. My heart still races from almost getting captured by the two agents who raided the condo. I hope people made it out safely.

It’s been months since I’ve seen Cian in person, and I forgot how short the troll was. Blue-rimmed glasses perch on his wide nose above his reddish-brown mustache and beard. His black slacks drag on the floor as he hops from his chair in front of the computer built into the wall.

Liv slips past me. “Cian, Drea’s was raided. I don’t know who got out.”

“How terrible. It’s getting out of control,” Cian says.

Liv nods. “I’m meeting with a few of my sisters here, but I wanted to let you know I’m in to help those who were taken.” Liv glances over her shoulder at me. “Nadia thinks we can break into the termination facility. I don’t have time to hear her plan, so can you call me later and fill me in when you decide something? I want my brother back. Also, call Blake for me, will you? I heard his niece went missing.” The words spill from Liv’s mouth. It’s so much to take in. Drea must be the first enchantress Alyssa and I met. I’m afraid to mention it, but if the man, Blake, she mentioned is missing his niece, I bet it’s the girl Ella Hunter told me about.

“Will do,” Cian says. “I didn’t know your brother stayed.”

She sighs. “He wouldn’t leave me.”

I hate other people are going through what I am, but I’m relieved I’m not alone. Everything doesn’t feel so hopeless when strangers don’t mock me and think I’m crazy for wanting to do what’s never been done—unlike the council.

Liv touches my shoulder and looks between me and Alyssa, and then to Mr. Augustine behind us. “I don’t know if it was fate or luck, but I’m so happy you found me when you did. If you need anything from me, let Cian know and he can find me.”

I nod and hug the enchantress. Liv waltzes through the door to The Haven and leaves us in the hall.

Cian rolls up the sleeves on his blue and white striped button-up shirt and offers me his hand. “Nadia, doll, I’m so sorry about Dmitri. He’s a tough man. He’ll be okay,” he says. I was hoping to avoid this conversation because it’s hard enough as it is to keep myself together without the reminder.

I try to smile but fail. “I’m glad someone thinks so. The council thinks he’s dead.”

His grin twists into a scowl. “Screw the council. They’re good for nothing.”

“You don’t have to tell me that.” I glance behind me at Alyssa and Mr. Augustine. “Cian, this is—”

“Been years since you’ve been around here, Sandy.” Cian offers out his hand to Mr. Augustine.

Mr. Augustine steps closer to greet the troll. Of course Cian would know him. He knows everyone it seems. I wonder why he doesn’t start his own council and kick Mr.
