Chapter 5

We went on and on... It is far on foot through the crystal snow that surrounds us on all sides.

I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked back at Frederick, who had an anxious expression on his face behind the crystallized glass. He pointed back behind us.

There it hung again a distance back. The cube had followed us... We looked back at it. It seemed to keep its distance.

“Why doesn't it just come and take us? We're defenseless!?” Roberta screamed, now completely dependent on Hans' support.

"I don't know!" Said Hans.

There it began to dawn!

"It doesn't know, and one of them was blown away by the laser!" I thought out loud.

"And what then?" Asked Maria Teresa.

“So it keeps a distance for safety. It is in our favor! Let's go ahead and see if it doesn't just keep the distance!” I said and started walking and then stopped right away again...

Ahead, another cube hung in the air with a rain of crystal around it as it emitted its cold light.

"What now fearless leader?" Asked Maria Teresa timidly.

I looked at her and looked back at the cube.

“We'll just move on! We are surrounded anyway, so we might as well just try to move forward!” I said and started walking towards the cube.

The cube didn't move, but I kept moving forward. I began to feel a burning sensation in the crystals that had entered my suit.

The others were watching.

I walked a little to the side so I passed right around the cube. We all held our breath as we passed it.

Nothing happened... We got past and moved on.

"I almost peed my panties!" Said Maria Teresa relieved.

"It is good that we have a diaper..." Frederick said and we laughed at it.

After all, when you're in suits like ours, there's only one solution when you have to... It's understandable.

We sighed in relief and moved on with the cubes behind us. But where were the other cubes?

So far, we didn't think about that, now it was just a matter of moving on.

“Hello, hello! Are you still down there? We receive your emergency signal! Are you there?” It said from the radio to our great relief.

So they had reached far enough down that we could receive signals with the transmitters in our suits.

“We are still here! What a joy to hear your voices! Are you receiving our emergency signals?” I answered back.

“We receive! What happened, though?” They asked.

I told them a brief summary and there was silence on the other end. It had to sink in. It must have sounded pretty crazy...

“Uh, it's received... Quite a story, but it does explain the strange crystals that grow around us. We are sending a signal to begin full quarantine of the mine!” He replied.

"Just get us out first!" I replied as ironically as I could.

“Hehe, we'll try to remember! Just keep your heads cool and follow our signal and we will find each other!” Answered the radio.

"What a relief!" Said Frederick a bit too early.

We found the signal on our transmitters and started walking as we stayed on the direction of the signal.
