Chapter 10

When the boy and I entered the bedroom we saw that the girl was awake. Ann was holding her up and the girl was in the process of drinking some of what looked to be a sports drink or maybe some juice. Seeing the girl awake was in itself a big improvement.

The girl seemed to try to smile when she saw her brother. I saw her drink some more and I actually think she drew some strength just from the fact she saw that her brother was safe and near her. Ann slowly lowered her back down on the bed. The girl was still awake and her brother went to her side and spoke to her.

“These are good people and they will help us. I got to have as much soup as I wanted. And there was even crackers to eat with the soup. I got to pick what kind I wanted to eat and everything. I told you these were good people.”

The girl managed to smile at the boy’s exuberance before she closed her eyes to sleep again. The boy stayed by his sisters side and Ann and I stepped out of the room for a talk.

“I was surprised to see that she was awake.”

“I was very worried and got the ammonia and used a little of that like smelling salts to wake her. I got her to drink a little and in a couple hours I’ll wake her again and try to get some soup in her. If we can get food and clean water in her I think she will be fine but she is so weak now. I’m not sure if it is too late or not. She needs to be fed through an IV but obviously we do not have that option. We can only do what we can do.”

“Is there anything you need me to do?”

“No there is little either of us can do. I’ll wake every few hours and get more liquids like juice and soup into her and maybe with God’s help she will make it.”

“I’m going out to just check on things a little around here. I’ll be back shortly.”

We went back inside the girl’s room and Ann asked the boy a question.

“What’s your name?”

“My name is Jacob but they call me Jac. My sister is Jan. Is she going to be OK?”

“I sure hope so. I promise to try really hard to make her better.”

“I told Jan that you were good people. Thank you for helping us.”

“You’re welcome. I just hope we can help your sister.”

“Can I stay in here with her?”

“Of course you can. I think that might make her get better faster.”

When I heard that I left and returned with a big padded chair for the boy, Jac to use. I set it right next to the bed then I left to check on everything outside.

I just walked around and looked everywhere for anything out of place or any movement. I did not really expect any attack or anything but really just wanted to think things through some.
