A MOTHER’S LOVE

With the men often gone all day, or working far from home, it’s the women who hold households together in Nicaragua. Mothers, grandmothers, aunts, godmothers, and sisters are typically the ones who manage household finances, cook and clean, look after the babies, help with school projects, and take on second jobs to bring in extra cash. When mothers have to work, grandmothers or daughters take their place in front of the family stove. A typical early-morning sound in Nicaragua is “hand-clapping,” as balls of maize dough are formed into tortillas, sometimes by three generations of women together. Large families can function only when everybody pulls together, and it’s the women who organize big family get-togethers, often roping in neighbors to help.

Given the central role of women in Nicaraguan culture, it is no surprise that the Virgin Mary, the very epitome of motherly sacrifice for Catholics, is the focus of such fervent devotion, especially during La Gritería and the Purisima, the December festivals in her honor.

Nicaraguan women are strong, forged by the country’s difficult past, and determined to provide a better future for their children.
