Lieutenant Marcus Mitchell sat in the front passenger seat of the operations van. He was parked on the road a few houses down from the property of ex-CIA operative Archer Blake. It was quite the impressive neighborhood.

Marcus had researched him during the ride over in the Gulfstream G800: Archer got rich after leaving the CIA, selling his skills to the highest bidders. Some of the jobs were of questionable legality, to clients who were dubious at best—the Saudi prince who wanted to cover up the accidental death of a pretty influencer who died in the hot tub of his Dubai penthouse; the Mexican drug lord who hired Archer to come up with the optimal drug smuggling route off the Florida Keys. There were also indications he was still involved with the latter business, providing ongoing consulting services to the cartel.

Marcus could use those jobs against the man, if he needed to. Marcus wasn’t one to judge, of course—he’d done some questionable jobs for questionable people himself. Including this job.

“That’s a lot of cameras,” the drone operator commented.

Marcus maximized the video feed from the drone on his augmented reality glasses so that the video consumed most of his vision. The near-silent device was using machine vision to catalog all the tiny cameras dotting the property.

He minimized the feed and turned toward the rear of the van to address the agent seated behind the drone operator. “Cut the power to the house, disable the land lines, and start up the jammer.”

The latter would interfere with the solar-powered cameras sprinkled across the property, and would also prevent anyone from making calls. It would affect the neighboring houses as well, so if anyone decided to be a boyscout and call in the incident, they wouldn’t be able to get a dial tone.

“Roger that.” The agent messaged the other operators who were working upstream of the team.

Marcus heard a series of thuds on the roof of the van. That would be more drones launching—they contained the jamming devices that would blanket the neighborhood.

A moment later the agent turned back to Marcus: “It’s done.”

Marcus signaled the men to begin the approach. The rear doors opened, and he followed the black-clad men onto the winding, tree-lined drive. Songbirds chirped somewhere in the branches above.

Such a beautiful day to be working.

He smiled grimly and continued forward, scanning his surroundings as he did so.

The group reached the tall imposing stone wall that fenced in Archer’s property, and then launched their grappling hooks.

In moments, Marcus and his men were over the fence and on the way to the mansion proper.
