The weight of the pirate woman was lifted off him and her sinister grin was wiped off as Partel got to his feet and tackled her off Jason.

Jason reached for his rifle on the floor and leveled it, plastering the woman with gunfire until the magazine buzzed on empty.

Calc was white, his face drained as he stared in horror, clearly expecting a reprimand.

Jason didn’t have the time in the middle of a firefight to decide.

‘Just bring that crane back,’ he said, sprinting across the room. ‘We’re going to give the big bastard a present.’

He skittered across the open area, risking himself to Darkheart’s shot, hoping to give Silver more time to weaken the shield. Heart pounding, he dived for cover beside where he’d last seen Xen. Huddled between a dead pirate and a man tossing more smoke grenades, Xen welcomed Jason by holding out a flask.

Jason took it, and for a stupid second, he assumed it was water. Too late.

‘Don’t you dare spit it out,’ Xen said, seeing the shocked look and puckered lips.

Jason winced as he swallowed the fiery liquid. ‘Got any more plasma charges?’

Xen reached around to his bag and pulled out a charge. It was the size of a claymore, with red rivulets through the metal that pulsed gently.

Like a fog, the smoke whirled around them.

The pirate beside them was staring at Xen in bewilderment. ‘You kept that fucking thing inside your bag?’

Xen shrugged with a grin, as if keeping explosives on him during firefights was just part of the fun.

There wasn’t time to argue. Jason snatched the charge and spun back to race through the thickening fog back to Calc and Partel. A cannon boomed as one of Darkheart’s men got inside the biggest tank, the tracks churning up the floor. As they fired wildly, men scattered on both sides. A section of the wall collapsed, sending shockwaves through the floor.

The tank rumbled across the room, belching thick smoke plumes. As it passed in front of them, Jason made a break for it. The air was knocked out of him as something huge smashed into him. He hit the floor, gasping for air.

The giant form of Darkheart loomed over him, shield raised to block the shots as he lifted a foot to stamp down on him.

Before the foot stomped down on him, a hand dragged him out. Silver fired as she dragged him back, forcing Darkheart to keep the shield raised. The laser weakened the shield more and more, being so close, and just as they lost sight of him through the smoke, the shield cut out.

‘Thanks,’ Jason said between gasps. He had lost his rifle somewhere and his pistol was long gone, but he still held onto the plasma charge.

Jackal’s voice carried above the rattling noise of gunshots and tank tracks. ‘Bring down the tank!’

Silver had found a grenade, and she unclipped it from her belt, before limping off towards the armored vehicle.

Jason watched her nimbly climb up and yank open the hatch before the smoke obscured what was happening.
