The Spire jutted up above a sea of skyscrapers, barricaded behind a towering wall that surrounded the city. Its thick steel walls were topped with turrets, troops, and barbed wire.

The Spire was four times the width of any other, dwarfing them with its round cylindrical shape and wider top.

Silver scanned the perimeter wall of the city. Guards casually paced its length, wrapped up against the cold, faces covered with masks to fight the chill and the nasty stench that pervaded the place.

From their vantage point on the opposite side of the canyon, the morning sun was just skimming the distant city.

Even in the morning's beauty, the city was a sorrowful sight.

Great plumes of charcoal-black smoke rose in ever-widening cones as if a hundred fires had just been extinguished.

Silver knew it was just the filth of too many people, too close together, with too little infrastructure to cope.

Now they had a moment to spare, Silver wanted answers. ‘What is Ruby doing in the Spire?’

‘Intelligence,’ Yamma said, eyeing the wall. ‘She has been incredibly useful in acquiring information.’

Silver gritted her teeth. ‘At what cost?’ she hissed, unable to keep the anger from her voice.

‘At her own choice,’ Yamma said, stopping and squaring up to Silver. ‘We all have to make sacrifices. And she is doing her part.’

‘Being used like a—’

‘A slave,’ Yamma finished. ‘Yes. but there is a difference between choosing to be a slave and having no choice.’ Yamma placed a hand on Silver’s arm. ‘We will get her out tonight, end her misery and—’

‘End Schmit.’

‘Ruby wanted to do this. She has saved a dozen slaves from the misery and her maps will help us tonight. You should be proud of her.’ She lowered her voice. ‘I had planned for her to take my place if and when…’ she trailed away, lost in thought before gazing up at the tower and setting her jaw firmly. ‘There will be most of the high rankers in that tower. We kill them all and the rest will flee like the cowards they are.’

‘How do we get in?’

‘We take the tunnels in. Others will meet us as we go under to reach the Spire.’

She led them across the canyon to another cave and they ascended a tunnel until they were confronted by a shadowy figure guarding a metal door in the half-light of the torches.

There was a click and the figure knelt, weapon raised to fire.

‘Peace, Garth,’ Yamma said. ‘It is us.’

Garth lowered the weapon and stood. He fumbled with a box fixed to the passage wall and a crude light buzzed overhead, illuminating a bulky man with his face covered in tattoos.

‘Rumor has it you’re going in the Spire,’ Garth said, his deep voice booming in the small space.

‘We are. It is time.’

Garth grinned, showing white teeth etched with symbols to match his tattoos. ‘Yes. I fight with you.’

‘Many are eager, but many will die.’

‘We all die. Better to die on your feet than live on your knees.’

‘We’ll take him,’ Xen said cheerfully, stepping forward and slapping the bulky man on his back.
