Giant Ibis
Thaumatibis gigantea
Another once-abundant bird, the Giant Ibis, of which there are only about 230 mature individuals remaining, is found in northern Cambodia, southern Laos, and there has been a sighting in Yok Don National Park in Vietnam. Once found across southern Vietnam and Thailand, today it is extinct in these parts. The main threats to it have been wetland alteration for agriculture, deforestation and hunting. A campaign is in place to try and eradicate the hunting of waterbirds in Laos and Cambodia. Protected habitat now exists for the species, and in the Northern Plains of Cambodia members of the local community are paid to watch over and protect waterbird nests and, in particular, those of the ibis. But more needs to be done to keep this, Cambodia’s national bird, in existence.
