CHAPTER 16

Daniel was no experienced sleuth, but he somehow managed to follow Kat around town without her noticing. Although, he knew he couldn't count the feat as a testament to his skill, or even contribute it to luck. She was so focused on the man she was trailing, he doubted she would have noticed if he put a neon sign and flashing lights on his car.

The man she was following looked vaguely familiar to Daniel and seemed to be just as clueless about being followed. But when Kat entered the No Name Bar, Daniel realized his invisibility factor would be coming to a screeching halt. The bar wasn't that big. He knew because it was one of his favorite haunts. On any given week, he would stop in at least once, sometimes twice, to listen to the musical groups that performed there nightly. He couldn't imagine there being much of a crowd this early, and it wasn't that big of a place, so he was well aware that once he stepped inside, it would be nearly impossible for him to remain inconspicuous.

He stood in the shadows of the stairwell near the corner of the mall and stared at the door, debating whether he should risk going in or wait for them to come out. Waiting outside was the only sure way to keep Kat from seeing him. But if the event she had come to stop was going down in the bar, he needed to be there.

He balled his hands into fists. If only he knew why she was here. When she told him in the lab her journey was personal, his first thought was that she had come to get revenge on a boyfriend. But after ruminating on it all night long, he no longer believed that to be true. Mainly because he couldn't imagine a tech on the project, who would be well versed in the risks involved, would willing send a girl through the gravity field for something as trivial as a relationship spat. And the guy she had been stalking all day did not look like the boyfriend type. There was no doubt the guy was involved in Kat's mission, but whether he was a friend or foe, Daniel couldn't tell. And the fact the guy looked familiar added an extra layer of mystery.

Fuck this, Daniel thought. Tugging the bill of his baseball cap down low, he tucked his chin, and headed in.

Even in the dim light, he had no trouble picking Kat out. She stuck out like a pumpkin in a basket of lemons, even though she was sitting at the bar with her back to him. The guy she had been stalking was sitting in the last barstool next to her.

Daniel's eyes rounded in recognition. That was how he knew the guy. He had seen him sitting on the last barstool against the wall just like that many times. The guy was always alone and never once did Daniel see him talk to anyone.
