At 11:30 the next morning, Sara was seated at her desk at home — 30 miles northwest of Tulsa. It was 1:30 PM back in the Eastern time zone — so she had one hour before putting the SIM card back in Blondie’s phone.

The A/C was running, the muddy Arkansas river was flowing by her window, and Kris Kristofferson was playing on her iPhone. She could breathe here. And try to calm her nerves. She sipped a cup of matcha green tea, enjoying its familiar bitterness.

Coming home was a gamble, but a good one. Research on Freestone Oil showed it was a relatively small company based in Oklahoma, with wells only there and in Texas.

Bob Stacey was CEO of Tulsa-based Stacey Security Group. A quick tour of his website showed a company that handled 32 types of security problems — ranging from embezzlement, insurance fraud, slander investigations and background checks to the more personal adultery/infidelity, sexual harassment, and substance abuse. It also said they handle “cheating.” It didn’t specify how they handled it.

A picture of Mason came into her mind — but she forced it away. She was terrified for him. Her only reassurance was Stacey probably wanted her now as much or more than Mason. They’d probably keep him safe until they got their hands on her, too.

There was no picture of Stacey on his company’s website, but by Googling she was able to find him identified in the background of a picture of local businessmen. He looked about 5’9” or maybe 5’10”. Slender. Black hair a little long for Oklahoma. He had touches of gray at the temples that he seemed too young to have. Maybe he dyed it to make him look more serious? He had a half-smile on his face that looked good-ole-boy without really meaning it. His suit was also a little too much for Oklahoma. He looked like a man who was very concerned with how he appeared to others.

Would he have brought Mason back here to Tulsa? While moving Mason was a risk, controlling him and dealing with her would be easier on his own turf. Here in Tulsa, he had places and politicians at his command. After all, Loretta Sue Humphreys was killed here. And she was unlikely to have been his first kill.

Mason could not have been taken on a commercial flight. Nor could he be driven — it was a 17 hour through drive, so there wasn’t enough time. There was a moment of panic when her check of the local Williamsport and State College Pennsylvania airports showed only regular charters or executive planes leaving last night or this morning. But a private jet did leave Harrisburg for Tulsa at 4AM. It was charged to Personnel Associates — a company that appeared to exist only as a web page.

If Stacey and Mason weren’t in Tulsa, she was sure they were nearby. They had to be. Because she had to save Mason.
