First “Skyscraper.” Before modern high-rises, achievements in building height followed different standards. For example, when physician Yves Le Monnier completed this building at Royal and St. Peter in 1811, it was only three stories high. Still, it was the French Quarter’s tallest at the time.98 When a fourth level was added in 1876, some believed the building would sink.99 But it did not sink, and the former Le Monnier Home was thereafter called the “skyscraper building.” Still others would name it “’Sieur George’s House” after the 1873 George Washington Cable story. No matter its official name, the “skyscraper” remains standing at 638–640 Royal Street, where its first level currently serves as an art gallery.
