A horse-drawn carriage and firefighters of the Hodges Square W.B. Thomas Hose Company No. 3 are pictured at 389 Williams Street. In 1936, the old structure was demolished, and a new building was erected. The new one was, in turn, demolished for the construction of the second span of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge. The Federal-style Deshon-Allyn House, at 625 Williams Street, was constructed for Daniel Deshon, a New London whaling captain. In 1851, whaling and shipping agent Lyman Allyn purchased it. His daughter Harriet Allyn Upton left money for the construction of the Lyman Allyn Art Museum (built in 1932) in memory of her father. The house is part of the museum property and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The property also contains the September 11th McCourt Memorial Garden, which honors the people of southeastern Connecticut who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
