I pace back and forth on the sidewalk of my parents’ house as I wait for Eimy to pick me up. It's a big deal that I make a good first impression with her parents.

The sound of a car screeching to a halt jerks my head up, and I see Eimy’s Lincoln. A thrill rushes through me when she gives me a onceover while I fasten my seat belt.

“You look handsome,” she says breathlessly.

I tug at the collar of my blue striped shirt that pokes out from the neckline of a navy blue sweater. This is the best I’ve dressed in years. "I went shopping." After Ezra's dad paid me when we installed tile in one of the volunteer projects he did for a church member. “I hope I'm not over dressed.”

She smiles. “I like seeing you dressed up.”

She always looks breathtaking, but tonight the orange floral shirt, which could work as a dress or a shirt, brings out the gorgeous pecan brown of her skin. “You look beautiful yourself.”

On the short drive, Eimy tells me about some of the holidays celebrated in Panama. I tear my gaze from her and stare at her dark leggings when she pulls into the driveway of a ranch style brick house with white siding.

She greets Eimy with a kiss, then steps aside to gesture us inside.

We follow Sally through a kitchen filled with the aroma of garlic and fried onions. I don’t detect an accent as she asks me about my family. She pauses and directs us to the dining room.

I wince at the bright twinkling lights strung around the massive Christmas tree in the corner of the room.

Why was I nervous to come in the first place? The question dries in my throat when the man of the house suddenly emerges. My stomach drops, along with my jaw.

“Papá.” Eimy pushes back her chair and her dad engulfs her in a cheery hug.

I can tell they’re a tight family, except I want to get lost right now, because the man with silver streaked dark hair is my counsellor.

“Edwin...” I breathe. He shakes my hand, his steely brows questioning. Or am I the one who’s uncertain? Did Eimy know her dad was my counselor when she dropped me off for one of my sessions?

Instantly, my palms start sweating and I rub them on my jeans. A tornado of fearful thoughts courses through my mind while Edwin talks to his daughter in the language I presume to be Spanish.

Have they been talking about me? What if he doesn’t sign off my recovery plan, since I’m kind
