Chapter 14
_________
Kayley
âOkay, what have you done with my stern commander?â Brigit asked.
Kayley ignored her and walked past her friends hanging out in her quarters for no reason. Werenât they assigned their own quarters? The hot steamy water would help.
âYouâre limping. Are you hurt?â
She had aches in all the right places. But she was not going to tell her friends that.
âI donât know what you mean.â
âYouâre wearing the same uniform from yesterday. And we havenât seen you since you left the meal room with Commander VictOR. The food we left for you here has gone untouched.â
She peered out of the bathroom at her friends. âIâll need to heat that up when Iâm done with my shower. Iâm starving.â She gave them a wink then closed the door.
âWorked up an appetite did you?â Laurel asked loudly.
âYes, I did!â Kayley yelled back before turning the shower on.
Laurel and Brigit laughed but Creole groaned. âIâm going to the training center for practice.â
âIâll come with you,â Laurel said.
âIs there a certain warrior you got your eye on?â Brigit asked.
âPlease, Goddess, make them stop talking,â Creole begged as he walked out of the quarters.
âWell?â Brigit asked again.
âMaybeâ was all Laurel said, leaving the quarters.
âOh, Iâm getting those answers.â Brigit followed her out, closing the door behind her.
Kayley took a quick shower and donned a clean uniform. She frowned when she realized her friends had left, but was also relieved not to explain where she had been and what she had been doing.
She noticed she had a message on her comm. Was it VictOR? He said he would be busy preparing for the arrival of another commander coming to check up on their progress in person. He didnât give her any details, and she didnât ask. Although, she was very curious. Kayley didnât want him to think she was overstepping.
Checking the message, it was from her peopleâs leader, Lidia. She listened to the voice message.
âCommander Kayley. You have been off planet for several weeks. We would like an update on the progress of the search. And I would like to know how my granddaughter is doing.â
Lidia was her grandmother and Kayleyâs only living relative. When in public view, they never really made a deal out of their relationship. They kept things professional to avoid problems.
Oh, it had been a problem when Kayley first stated her desire to train as a warrior. Warrior training and the military was a male-dominated world and even with their advanced society, it had remained that way for centuries.
Lidia had some pull as leader, though she answered to a council of five. There was a huge debate, but in the end, Kayley was allowed entrance into the warrior training program. She had to prove herself over and over, some males tried to convince Kayley to back out, but she refused. Her friends called her stubborn. Anyway, she passed every test in the warrior training. The council had no excuse but to back Lidiaâs decision.
Kayley didnât let her grandmother or her people regret it. She applied herself and worked harder than anyone else.
