Mary Elle studied the divorce papers they had served her a couple of days ago. She had signed them the same day she received them, but she was still unsettled. Mary Elle knew divorcing Bill was what needed to be done, but why did it feel so easy?
She and Bill had been married for so long, yet it felt like it had all meant nothing. Just a little signature and everything would be erased.
âPenny, for your thoughts?â Thomas asked from the doorway to Mary Elleâs office.
âOh, sorry, were you standing there for long?â
âYou seemed lost in thought, and I wasnât sure if I should interrupt. Is everything okay?â
âYeah, everything is fine. Itâs just that I thought this whole divorce thing would be much more complicated.â
âAh, I see.â
âI expected my husband to put up a fight and not be so cooperative.â She hated to admit it, but she wished Bill would put up more of a fight. Instead, she felt like - he couldnât wait to get this over with so he could move on and leave her out in the cold.
âIs it a bad thing that heâs not acting out?â
âNo, of course not. It is just surprising. I guess Iâll be a free woman in a shorter time than I imagined.â Mary Elle laughed, âNow that the shock has worn out and I can reflect on the past - I realize we were more roommates than anything else, so this is definitely for the best.â
âLucky for you, Willow Heights is just the place for fresh starts.â
âIâm beginning to believe you.â
âDo you have a moment? I want to show you something.â
âRight now? Iâm kind of on the clock. Iâm not sure what my boss will say.â
âI know the old grump. I promise Iâll put in a good word for you if he says anything,â Thomas said with a gleam in his eyes.
âOkay then, if you insist.â
