Mary Elle studied the divorce papers they had served her a couple of days ago. She had signed them the same day she received them, but she was still unsettled. Mary Elle knew divorcing Bill was what needed to be done, but why did it feel so easy?

She and Bill had been married for so long, yet it felt like it had all meant nothing. Just a little signature and everything would be erased.

“Penny, for your thoughts?” Thomas asked from the doorway to Mary Elle’s office.

“Oh, sorry, were you standing there for long?”

“You seemed lost in thought, and I wasn’t sure if I should interrupt. Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, everything is fine. It’s just that I thought this whole divorce thing would be much more complicated.”

“Ah, I see.”

“I expected my husband to put up a fight and not be so cooperative.” She hated to admit it, but she wished Bill would put up more of a fight. Instead, she felt like - he couldn’t wait to get this over with so he could move on and leave her out in the cold.

“Is it a bad thing that he’s not acting out?”

“No, of course not. It is just surprising. I guess I’ll be a free woman in a shorter time than I imagined.” Mary Elle laughed, “Now that the shock has worn out and I can reflect on the past - I realize we were more roommates than anything else, so this is definitely for the best.”

“Lucky for you, Willow Heights is just the place for fresh starts.”

“I’m beginning to believe you.”

“Do you have a moment? I want to show you something.”

“Right now? I’m kind of on the clock. I’m not sure what my boss will say.”

“I know the old grump. I promise I’ll put in a good word for you if he says anything,” Thomas said with a gleam in his eyes.

“Okay then, if you insist.”
