We find ourselves hovering above the corporate district for longer than expected. The streets are packed with cars, the air dense from the putrid stench of exhaust. Hovers whiz past us. Birds barely line the sky. All of this is more overwhelming than anything I’ve experienced in a good bit of time. The fact that I haven’t been out for so long in months is definitely eating away at my confidence.

We circle above the sector, lower and lower, quicker and quicker, until my eyes catch sight of something on the farthest edge of the gated border.

A parking lot. A landing pad. A perfect entrance.

“There.”I point. “Let’s land there.”

Xio nods, a laugh falling from her lips. “All right, boss,” she replies. “Good catch!”

I turn to where Cain sits by my side. “Cain,” I prompt, “will this work?”

I do not trust him very much. The already small shard of confidence I once had in him has fleeted with every second.

Do I have a choice?

No, I can already picture him saying. Either you trust me, or not, darling. I don’t really care which you choose.

His voice has an agitating way of wiring itself in my head.

“I don’t—” Cain’s words are cut short by a tug in the Hover’s stability. Turbulence. His eyes widen, his voice resuming in a quicker tone. “Shit,” he curses. “If we don’t contact them—if we don’t state our reasoning for being here—we’re all going to die.”

I don’t know what he’s planning to do. “But you can’t—”

“Do you want to die, darling?” Cain asks. His words are trembling. His fear is genuine. “I don’t plan on saying, I’m here with two Immortals trying to kidnap a doctor—”

“Contact them,” Xio orders, cutting him off. “Do it.”

Cain freezes for a moment. “Now,” I order, echoing Xio’s words. “Send them a message—or however you do that.”

“All right.” Cain clears his throat, pointing a finger in the direction of the control pad. “Press that button.”

Xio does as Cain orders. A moment of silence ensues in the wake of the button’s click. Nothing. We may or may not be in deep trouble, depending on how this all plays out.

We already are.

“This is the communications department of the capital sector of the city of Los Angeles. Entrance is restricted without governmental identification.” A robotic voice fills my ears, static and impatient. The voice quickly resumes. “Who are you and what brings you here?”

“Cain Hawkins, Exterminator of the San Diego regiment—identification number 12167.”

The silence is torturing me. I clench my fists, chew on the edge of my lip. The silence meets its end.

“Cain Hawkins,” says the voice, “state your reasoning for arrival.”

He forgot to answer that. He could turn us in at any given moment.

“I was sent as an ambassador for San Diego—to discuss the fate of Doctor Meyer.”

“I don’t—”

“You’re cleared to land, man.” Another voice—a younger, brighter one—fills in the place where the old one spoke. “Welcome to the capital!”

We’re clear. We made it.

Xio lets out an utterly relieved sigh, a breath held for too long. Cain, who tightly sits beside me, does not share this same relief.
