Chapter Eleven
âShe WHAT?â he barked into his phone, half expecting the damn thing to bite him back.
This was not what Caleb expected when his phone rang and Kariâs name appeared on the screen. A video call, even. He didnât actually know what heâd expected after months of silence from her, but this was definitely not it.
âCarolina dumped him? On Instagram? Did she give a reason? What exactly did she say? Is it some kind of bad joke?â
Kari sighed, running her hand through her hair, tucking loose strands behind one ear. âI... donât know? Itâs hard to say. Itâs her bachelorette week, so who knows? Have you talked to Christian?â
âNot since yesterday. He's flying in any minute.â
âWhere are you?â
âAt St. Alban's.â
âAlready?â
âWe decided to meet Mom and Dad here a few days early. They're coming tomorrow. Just the four of us for one last time.â He grimaced. âOr so we thought.â
Compassion filled her voice, eyes filled with emotion. âOh, Caleb. I hate to think of them finding out about this before we â before you can tell them.â
He loved the way she said his name. Adored it. Needed it.
Needed her.
âI know. Me, too. Kari, Iâcan you meet us here? I think it would really help my parents get through this. They still love you. And you were going to be here on Wednesday anyway, right? Can you come early?â
She was silent, looking down. He had no idea what to read into that, if anything. A smart man would take her distance as an obvious cue she wasnât interested.
And Caleb was a smart man. Very smart, he knew.
When it came to Kari, though, he felt clueless. Helpless, even, in the dark moments when he admitted that to himself. For the last few months heâd thrown himself into his work and his new foundation, the transition going smoothly. His brotherâs wedding was an afterthought, even if Kari wasnât.
No matter how hard heâd tried, he couldnât put her on the back burner. Respecting her boundaries was key. He wouldnât cross them.
But this time, sheâd called him.
âI know you have a company to run. We would obviously pay you for your time and of course your expenses and...â
Still nothing.
âNever mind. Bad idea. I shouldnât have askedââ
âUm, sure. Dave and Anne are great. This must be so hard on them.â
He snorted. âIn every way you can imagine.â
âWhat does that mean?â
His eyebrows shot up and she gasped.
âThey donât like Carolina?â
He just blinked at her. His parents had adored Kari. Been stunned when they broke up. He hadnât been living at home when it happened, and his mom and dad werenât the type to pry. Over the years, theyâd bring her up with a wistful tone. When Caleb had met Jen and theyâd moved in together, his parents had always been polite. Friendly, even.
But theyâd never connected with Jen the way they had with his first love.
âI⦠I think I can rearrangeâ¦â
His heart jumped three stories. âThat would be great, that would really⦠thank you, Kari. Iâll call Christian now and find out what he knows.
